Shortly after Zaire came to live with us, my husband and I decided to divorce. I packed up the birds and moved my Mali and Zaire to Utah to attend school at BYU. I’m so glad I had my feathered friends through this time in my life. They were my consistency and my sounding boards for my sadness during this time. We moved into a small apartment, but they seemed to adjust fine. After 3 weeks of being in our new home, I got into a bad car accident that landed me in the hospital for almost a month. A couple of my new neighbors cared for my feathered kids as I recovered. I’m sure they must have thought I abandoned them. They were so happy to see me when I returned, but I had a lot of recovery to do. My retired mom and dad helped me care for them and myself.
Eventually I could take care of myself again and entered the dating scene. I met a handsome man named John and we all moved in with him. Zaire took a liking to John immediately. He seems to like him more when his hair is bushy. Mali tolerates John, but is in no way fond of him. She’s very sassy with him. It’s been 4 years since we moved in and life is good. John built the birds a beautiful bird aviary outside for them to play in when it’s warm and their cages sit next to a big window in our bedroom. We are about to buy our first home and John plans to help me convert one of the new rooms in the house into a bird room. I’ve always wanted one and am so excited to get started.
